Blended from nature's best ingredients, Montana Pitch-Blend Leather Oil Soap utilizes pine pitch, pure mink oil, and natural rich vegetal oil to bring you the highest quality leather soap to beautify and extend the life of your leather.  Note:  Our product is a true soap, not a detergent.

What is soap and what are detergents? - Soaps are made from all-natural fats and oils, or their fatty acids, which are materials found in nature.  Whereas detergents are created from synthetic chemicals usually created in labs or  at large chemical facilities.  Detergents were developed in Germany around 1916 when natural oils to make soaps were scarce. The list of chemicals used to make detergents is alarming and detergents are not bio-degradable like soaps are. Beginning around 1960, it was noted that there was more foam on rivers, more fish and wildlife were perishing as a result of toxins,  and that sewage treatment facilities were encountering serious problems, this due to the fact that detergents are not degraded by the bacteria naturally present in effluents. There is little doubt that soap is better for your health and the environment than detergents.

How does a soap work? - Water, which is the liquid most commonly used in the cleaning process, has a property called surface tension. This surface tension causes water to bead-up and not disperse which slows its ability to completely cover and penetrate the surface of the item to be cleaned. For effective cleaning, surface tension must be reduced so water can spread and penetrate the material. This enables the water to better grab onto and remove dirt and contaminates. Soap molecules have the ability to greatly reduce surface tension (called surfactants or "surface active agents") and thereby can loosen, emulsify, and hold dirt suspended in the water until it can be rinsed or wiped away.

Why excess fat and oil helps in soaps - Besides breaking down surface tension, soaps are better than detergents (especially for leather or even skin care products) because soaps can be formulated with an excess of fat, oils, and natural glycerin. This is very important because it helps to preserve the moisture (natural oils) within the leather.  It's an important benefit to avoid stripping leather of its natural oils, which can happen with detergents or harsh cleaning agents.  Instead its best to be able to replenish the oils to keep the leather soft and pliable.  Montana Pitch-Blend Leather Oil Soap has been specifically formulated with an excess of fats and leather-friendly oils, as well as the natural glycerin which is a by-product of the soap making process.  The result is a premium handcrafted soap made from nature's best ingredients, to effectively clean and prepare leather for proper conditioning, while helping to retain and preserve the oils naturally contained within leather.

A word on glycerin in our soap - All of us have used body or hand soaps that have dried out our skin.  This usually occurs because these soaps do not have any excess oils because the glycerin is often skimmed off when the soap is made so that companies can sell the glycerin separately from the soap.  These type of soaps are much cheaper to make, but they are harsh to your skin and rob your skin of natural oils and conditioners. When choosing a leather cleaning product make sure it has the ability to clean without stripping the natural oils and drying out your leather. Of course we recommend Montana Pitch-Blend Leather Oil Soap which has been formulated to retain its glycerin.

The key to beautiful leather Proper cleaning, care and conditioning are the true keys to maintaining beautiful leather. Neglect and harsh conditions are the primary reasons for damage and deterioration of leather goods. By using a high quality leather treatment product, you can go a long way to extending the life and beauty of your valuable leather goods. Montana Pitch-Blend leather treatments help to protect your investment in leather by restoring natural oils and protecting against the elements. When untreated leather is not nourished or protected, it will dry out over time, or even more rapidly in hot, dry weather, which will make it susceptible to damage, and drying out is not the only threat to leather which can also be ravaged by mold or mildew in damp environments. Although no product can fully water-proof your leather, proper conditioning and water-resistance can help prevent excess water penetration and subsequent damage. With Montana Pitch-Blend, our customers have enjoyed the benefits of well-cared for and conditioned leather, which even after extreme exposure in wet conditions still are able to come back to supple condition.
